Stained Glass Series

Celebrate Composer Anniversaries

David Stahl, Conductor
Jennifer Luiken, Mezzo Soprano

This performance in Citadel's beautiful Summerall Chapel celebrates the anniversaries of the births of many beloved composers whose evocative and intriguing works have a lasting place in the classical repertoire.

The program features Emil von Reznicek's Overture to Donna Diana and Robert Schumann's  Overture to Manfred.  Samuel Barber's beautiful and moving Adagio for Strings is an iconic work with a memorable premiere by Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. The piece, often used to show reverence at times of mourning, will be familiar to many because of its use in films like "Platoon" and "Amelie".

The program culminates with Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder, an introspective battle between light and darkness profoundly affected by his own experiences with death.  Mezzo soprano and Charleston Southern University faculty member, Dr. Jennifer Luiken, will accompany the CSO.
